Personality: Valerian is a pretty carefree and lighthearted fellow. Outwardly he might seem like a complete goof, but anyone who knows him well will know it only hides the perilous battler within. On and off the battlefield, Val likes to make jokes and can find humor even in the most serious moments of battle. In and out of battle he is also a chivalrous gent to his friends and enemies alike. He has a fine taste for food and may on occasion be caught taking a more generous supply of fodder for himself. He hasn't spent as much time in war as some of the other officials, but what he lacks in experience he tries to compensate with youthful zeal and boundless battle vigor.

Backstory: Valerian was born and raised in the harsh, mountainous Blackthorn City. He and his family were one of the many families living in fear of the Dragon Clans and their powerful monsters. Though Val admired the fierce dragons, his parents would never let him near them or the insane cave dwellers that trained them. He often sneaked off to find them but was never successful. His closest attempt was buying Aeyin's egg which turned out wasn't a dragon egg.
When the war started up, he joined on the side of his homeland in order to defend it. He enjoys a good, fair fight and it turns out he wasn't too shabby at dueling with portable monsters, especially winged ones. He ascended the ranks and soon found himself the Air Force Brigadier.
During his first visit to Unova for Pokemon seeking purposes, he got lost within the untamed depths of the White Forest but was found by a young woman. She happened to have Togetic of the female variety, and both Valerian and his companion were hopelessly twitterpaited. During his off-time, Valerian takes trips to Unova to visit his newly-wed wife. He hopes that after the war he can move to Unova and spend more time with his love.

Aeyin is the only Pokemon Val owned before joining the Johto Army. As a boy, he bought Aeyin as an egg from the Blackthorn Market, thinking it was a dragon egg, with all of his allowance money. Though initially disappointed when it hatched into a little fluff ball, the pair soon became close friends. Val actually didn't realize Aeyin was a Pokemon until he joined the Johto army and was requested to keep him in a Pokeball. Though this knowledge did explain why weird things happened when Aeyin waggled his fingers in his Togepi days...
If you see Aeyin out on the battle field, he most likely won't be exchanging blows with the enemy, but passing messages along to teammates. He isn't much of a battler, but he is certainly a team player and is an excellent delivery boy. However, he can contribute to a fight if the need arises.
Aeyin is also Valerian's living wedding band, being the mate of his Unovan wife's own Togetic.

This spectacular skarmory is hands down the powerhouse of Valerian's team. He put up a fierce fight when Val and some other army fellows captured him and his flock on the outskirts of Val's own hometown of Blackthorn. But Salv gets along just fine with Val since they both share a powerful thirst for fighting.

Valerian caught Maelstrom during one of his visits to Unova for both business and visiting his wife. She is the least cooperative of Salv's mons and rebels against some of his commands fairly often. She likes to fight her own way and doesn't want a human backseat battling for her.

A near-sighted little Swablu that Val decided to to take under his wing ~puns~. She is still quite small and inexperienced in the ways of war, so Valerian mostly keeps her for support and relaxation after a long day of work. He sees great potential in her but her true potential might surpass Valerian's own expectations.
